ZF Builds the Future of Automation with Scalable 360 Safety for Trucks and Trailers

The new scalable architecture integrates sensing, perception, braking and steering to provide continuous 360-degree environmental awareness while laying the technological foundation for higher levels of commercial vehicle automation.

One of the system's key innovations is the Truck-Trailer Link, a high-speed automotive Ethernet connection that allows radar and camera data from both the truck and trailer to be combined into a single environmental model. This significantly reduces blind spots and improves object detection in highway, urban and logistics environments.

Beyond traditional driver warnings, ZF's latest OnGuardMAX platform actively intervenes when necessary. The system supports compliance with the European General Safety Regulation (GSR) while offering additional active collision avoidance capabilities, including automatic emergency braking for vulnerable road users.

For highway operation, Highway Assist combines Continuous Lane Keeping Assist (CLKA), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Stop & Go functionality to provide smoother and safer driving.

In logistics yards, reversing assistance enhances visibility and can automatically apply emergency braking during docking manoeuvres. Additional trailer-mounted side cameras further improve situational awareness.

ZF also integrates its Driver Monitoring System (DMS), capable of detecting distraction and fatigue while actively supporting the driver. The Rescue Assist function recognizes approaching emergency vehicle sirens, even when they are outside the driver's field of vision.

The company's scalable ADAS architecture supports future sensor upgrades and advanced data fusion, allowing OEMs to continuously expand vehicle capabilities without redesigning the entire platform.

According to ZF, the new technology not only meets current European safety regulations but also helps manufacturers prepare for future Euro NCAP requirements and higher levels of automated commercial driving.
