Daimler Truck Accelerates Level 4 Autonomous Truck Development for 2027 Commercial Launch

STUTTGART / ANN ARBOR — Daimler Truck is accelerating the development of its Level 4 autonomous trucking platform as it moves closer to its planned commercial launch in the United States in 2027. The company, together with its autonomous technology subsidiary Torc Robotics, continues to expand validation activities on public roads while increasing engineering capabilities to support large-scale deployment.

The autonomous solution is based on the latest Freightliner Cascadia, integrating redundant steering, braking and electrical systems designed specifically for SAE Level 4 autonomous operation. The vehicle is intended to operate within predefined Operational Design Domains (ODDs), allowing fully autonomous driving under specific highway conditions without human intervention.

Driver-out testing marks a major milestone

One of the most significant milestones in the program has been Torc Robotics' successful driver-out testing on closed test tracks. During these validation exercises, the autonomous system controls the vehicle without a safety driver inside the cab, demonstrating the maturity of the technology before broader commercial deployment.

While driver-out testing currently remains limited to controlled environments, Daimler Truck continues supervised public-road testing in the United States as part of its long-term validation program.

Built on a production-ready truck platform

Unlike many autonomous vehicle developers that retrofit existing trucks, Daimler Truck has integrated autonomous technology directly into the production architecture of the Freightliner Cascadia.

The truck incorporates redundant braking, steering, electrical power and communication systems, ensuring continued operation even if one subsystem experiences a fault. This redundancy is considered essential for achieving Level 4 autonomous capability.

Engineering expansion supports commercialization

To support commercialization, Torc Robotics has expanded its engineering operations in Ann Arbor, Michigan, strengthening software development, artificial intelligence and systems integration capabilities.

The company continues to collaborate closely with Daimler Truck on perception systems, decision-making software and vehicle control technologies that are required for commercial autonomous freight transport.

Preparing for the next era of freight transportation

Daimler Truck believes autonomous trucking can improve road safety, reduce operating costs and help address the industry's growing driver shortage.

The company remains focused on launching commercially viable Level 4 autonomous trucks in the United States by 2027, initially operating on carefully selected freight corridors before wider deployment.
